Spring Design has created the best dual-screen Android eReader to date, but we wish it cost less.
All told, the Spring Design Alex eReader is a fun device for anyone who likes the idea of an e-ink based reader, but also wants the added functionality that comes with a second screen and Android. Just don't expect the interface polish you'll get with competing devices.
With its thoughtful design and wealth of features, the Alex eReader brims with potential…[but] I can't ignore the high price."
While it feels like a work in progress, it does have some impressive features and is wonky enough to appeal to techie types. For the average consumer, however, it's easy to write off because of its $399 price point and odd-bird design.
We're not saying that Spring Design's Alex doesn't have a ton of potential, it just doesn't have enough books or connectivity options to justify its $399 price point today.
No doubt, Alex is a very cool, high end ereader.
In all, the Alex is an interesting e-reader packed with extras, but…for just $100 more you can get an iPad, which is far more versatile and has many fewer usability quirks.
Despite a number of glaring shortcomings beside readers like the Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble’s Nook, Spring Design’s Alex can hold its head high for doing things its main competitors simply won’t.
Those who enjoy tinkering with Android and who are willing to put in some legwork when it comes to digital content will find plenty to occupy them...but right now this feels a niche device within the ereader market.
